Title: Enigmas of Subjectivity: On the necessity of phenomenology for psychology and psychiatry
Prof. Louis Sass (1949) is Distinguished Professor of Clinical Psychology, Graduate School of
Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers University, and a member of the New York
Institute for the Humanities. Sass has published on schizophrenia, phenomenological
psychopathology, psychoanalysis, and the thought of Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and Foucault—
as well as on modernism/postmodernism and other cultural issues. Sass has received various
awards for his contributions to theoretical and philosophical psychology as well as fellowships
from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute for Advanced Study in
Princeton NJ, and the Fulbright Foundation. He has been a visiting professor at the universities
of Chicago, Copenhagen, Paris, Colombia (Bogota), and Michoacan (Mexico), among others.
He is the author of The Paradoxes of Delusion: Wittgenstein, Schreber, and the Schizophrenic
Mind, and of Madness and Modernism: Insanity in the Light of Modern Art, Literature, and
Thought. A revised edition of Madness and Modernism (Oxford University Press) was awarded
the BMA: British Medical Association First Prize as best book in psychiatry for 2018.
