In pressurised, time-driven and results-oriented settings with multiple parties and agendas, some conflict is likely during the lifespan of a PhD. So, it would be wise to have approaches that keep you steady and that keep professional relationships sound enough to withstand the changing weather of research.

This workshop explores your approach to these situations and offers tools and insights to use on issues that matter to you, so you can begin practicing right away. Specifically, by the end of the workshop you’ll have begun to:

• Recognise different ‘modes of operation’ in conflict
• Understand and manage different ‘systems’ in the brain
• Design relationships that withstand changing pressures
• Replace undermining behaviours with those that strengthen relationships 
• Practice empathy, effective listening and clear questioning
• Understand your own, and others’ agendas
• Use solution-focused approaches to find ways forward
• Clarify your role in the process and where you want to set boundaries
