This “Meet the Expert” lecture will provide an overview of the organisation and delivery of primary care in Scotland, with a particular focus on approaches to improving equity in healthcare. Professor Kate O’Donnell will discuss the structure of Scottish primary care, the role of general practice within the wider healthcare system, and current challenges related to access, workforce, and addressing health inequalities.

A specific focus will be placed on the GPs at the Deep End initiative, which brings together general practices serving the most socioeconomically deprived communities in Scotland. The session will explore how this initiative aims to better understand and respond to the complex needs of patients experiencing multiple disadvantages, and what lessons can be drawn for strengthening person-centred and equity-oriented primary care.

The lecture will provide an opportunity for researchers, PhD candidates, and academic staff to exchange knowledge and reflect on international perspectives on primary care organisation, health inequalities, and strategies to improve access and responsiveness of healthcare systems.
