2 MAY 2023

MOVING BEYOND DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION AT GHENT UNIVERSITY

How do we, at Ghent University, want to engage in international cooperation with academic and non-academic partners based in Latin America, Africa and Asia – and how do our partners want to collaborate with us? This question was central to a two-year policy study on “moving beyond development cooperation at Ghent University”.

The Academic Director for Internationalization and the Research Department invite you to share your feedback on the findings of this study.

The report discusses key themes, bottlenecks and opportunities for moving beyond the framework of university development cooperation. It offers ways to understand and respond to challenges relating to 1) collaborative dynamics, 2) the production and sharing of local and global knowledge, and 3) the question ‘why change?’. Further, it includes key findings that relate to the trajectories of PhD students from the Global South at Ghent University.

“Collaborative dynamics: reciprocity, inequality and difference”

Ghent University strives for mutually beneficial partnerships in order to get the most out of a collaboration. How do academic partners deal with inequalities and differences in their search for reciprocity?

In this break-out session, you are invited to share your feedback on the first chapter of the report, and reflect on its three case studies: 1) international shared supervision of Global South PhD students, 2) North-South student mobility, and 3) the role of funding mechanisms.

“Producing and Sharing Knowledge: society, the local and the global”

In moving beyond the framework of University Development Cooperation, international discourses increasingly speak of ‘global challenges’ and ‘global development’. How do we (re)position the ‘South’ and the ‘North’ in the constellation of ‘the global’ and ‘the local’?

In this break-out session, you are invited to share your feedback on the second chapter of the report, and reflect on its three case studies: 1) PhD projects as a form of capacity building for the Global South, 2) the North-South division of funding mechanisms at Ghent University, and 3) the division between research and education in regards to internationalization policy.

“Why change? Identifying internal weak spots, and benefits from change”

What would more reciprocal and equitable North-South partnerships contribute to the strengthening of Ghent University other than being more inclusive in the spirit of global solidarity? And how does international collaborative work reveal internal weak spots at Ghent University?

In this break-out session, you are invited to share your feedback on the third chapter of the report, and reflect on its three case studies: UGent policy frameworks for 1) academic evaluation, 2) academic collaboration, and 3) international learning.
