We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming ForNaLab seminar by Prof. Meelis Pärtel (University of Tartu, Estonia).
About the talk:
This talk introduces the concept of dark diversity -- the set of species that are absent from a site despite suitable environmental conditions. Prof. Pärtel will explain how dark diversity can be quantified and used to detect patterns of vegetation impoverishment at a global scale. The presentation will highlight how this approach can inform conservation prioritization, identify hidden biodiversity potential, and provide a powerful tool for evaluating the success of nature restoration efforts.
About the speaker:
Meelis Pärtel is Professor of Botany at the University of Tartu, Estonia. His research focuses on the macroecology of biodiversity, examining how processes operating from local communities to continents shape species distributions and diversity patterns, while incorporating evolutionary history and past land use into ecological understanding. He also explores the relationships between biodiversity and human well-being, including the impacts of anthropogenic change. His work includes developing the concept of dark diversity, which captures species that are ecologically suitable but absent from a site, and advancing its applications in conservation, restoration, and ecological assessment.
We look forward to welcoming Prof. Pärtel and to an inspiring discussion. All are welcome.
