In this workshop students and early-stage researchers to meet an discuss with Momodou Taal. Mr. Taal is an experienced organizer who become known during his time at Cornell University as the producer and host of the podcast known as the “Malcolm Effect”. In the podcast, Mr. Taal has interviewed several famous scholars and intellectuals, including Robin D.G Kelley, Vijay Prashad and Gerald Horne. Next to the podcast, he is also one of the editors between the new independent news site “Vox Ummah”, and recently published a book based on his podcast titled  “The Malcolm X Effect”.


The workshop will focus on facilitating an exchange between Mr. Taal and with PhD candidates and early-stage researchers that are interested or working on the student protests and social movements. Registered participants will be asked to prepare for the session by listening to one of Mr. Taal’s podcast episodes, released in the summer of 2024 and to prepare to share their own research and/or experience of the 2024 student protests. This will help to orient the discussion around questions such as: What role does researchers have during protests and social unrest? How can researchers contribute to creating an informed public debate? And what is the role of alternative media in doing so?
