CESSMIR Lecture: An Intersectional Perspective on the Politics of Migration and Citizenship.

 

Abstract: How are migration politics gendered and racialized? This lecture starts by exploring the long road to gender equality in nationality law. We will seek to understand the gender and family norms that underly different regulations of access to citizenship. In a second part, the lecture explores how gender and race intersect in the Othering of certain citizens and migrants, by analyzing Orientalist discourses on marriage migration in the Netherlands.

 

Bio: Saskia Bonjour is associate professor in political science at the University of Amsterdam. She teaches mostly in the field of gender & politics and intersectionality. Her research focuses on the politics of migration and citizenship in the Netherlands and in Europe. She is especially interested in family migration, civic integration, gender and migration, and Europeanisation.

 

This lecture is a guest lecture in the course ‘Migration & Society’. It is open to the public and can be attended on campus only.
