The pitching format has been increasingly adopted in the context of academic conferences and applications. In this workshop, Tom De Moor (UCT), an expert in presentation and application skills, will provide general guidelines for proper pitching based on authentic examples. The workshop will focus on message, structure, and delivery and is particularly helpful for researchers who are preparing for grant proposal pitching. Tom De Moor coordinates, develops, and teaches academic and professional language education at the University Language Centre (UCT).

To increase your chances of a successful peer-reviewed publication, Nele Pauwels (KCGG) provide a toolbox on complying with international reporting standards and journal regulations, and fitting within the journal's scope. This session Greet Wieme (KCGG) will also guide researchers in selecting the right communication strategy to increase their scientific research's visibility. It includes discussion on the tools offered by Ghent University, and the use of social media and online academic networks like LinkedIn, Twitter, ResearchGate, and Academia.edu.

The following questions will be addressed:

  • How to select a journal to publish my article?

  • How to evaluate the quality of an Open Access journal, including predatory journals and research paper mills?

  • What is an ORCID iD, and why is it useful?

  • What are the pros and cons of sharing my research on online academic social networks?

Data is increasingly recognized as a primary research output. However, making data visible can be challenging. How can you ensure that data is shared as openly as possible but as closed as necessary? In this workshop, Laura Standaert (Data steward Life Sciences) will help you navigate the landscape of data sharing requirements and restrictions.

Citizen science, the involvement of non-professional researchers in the scientific process, has seen a remarkable growth in recent years, proving its potential in Flanders with successful projects like 'Curieuzeneuzen', 'Waarnemingen.be', and 'Telraam'. In this interactive session, Jef Van Laer (Scivil) explores the various aspects of citizen science beyond just crowdsourcing data gathering, including its processes, methods, advantages, and pitfalls. He will also showcase a range of inspiring projects that highlight the diversity and potential of citizen science.
